A website is a very important and critical asset to a business owner. Unfortunately, there is even a more critical asset or aspect that comes with owning a website - it is the website Hosting Account on which the website is hosted. Without a hosting account there is no website!

These are very important issues that one needs to consider before entrusting a website to a web hosting company (web host). If little or no proper attention is given to these issues - the business or website owner may pay a high price down the road!

Here are important issues to pay attention to when applying for a Web Hosting Account:

Reputation of the Web Hosting Company - these days it's very easy for any Joe Public to purchase a Server and get a clever student of computer science to help him/her get started as a web hosting company! Just enter "Web Hosting" on the Search Engines and see how many Web Hosting Company results are returned. So, before you entrust your website to one of such companies you need to do a little research about how long they've been in business, how they are faring in Web Hosts Rating Surveys, What Hosting Space they are offering, How much maximum Bandwidth is allocated per Month and per Day. Also check their availability rate (anything less than 98% is not good!) and their Technical Support.

Web Hosting Space - although it depends on the number of web pages, graphics, files hosted etc, any web hosting company that offers anything less than 200MB of web hosting space should be avoided. Even a conservative use of graphic images on web pages can quickly "eat up" hosting space. Besides this, even a hosting space of 200MB almost offers no room for growth for even a small website. Of cause, directly related to this is the cost per MB that you pay the web hosting company. When it comes to pricing, in South Africa you come across two extremes. On ONE end of the scale are web hosting companies that charge over R100.00 for web hosting space of 50MB to 100MB, and then on the OTHER end of the scale you find companies that charge R19.00 for ridiculously small web hosting spaces (and almost nothing else!). Amazingly these companies have clients who are paying for such a service!

A small or shrinking web hosting space can cost a business dearly. How? Well, as the allocated web hosting space is used up, the slower the web pages of the web site load when users click on website addresses (URLs) to those pages. On the Website Design web page we mention the "3 Second Rule" of website design and Search Engine Optimization. If your web page takes longer than 3 seconds to load - you lose the visitor or potential customer! You therefore lose sales. Website visitors hate slow loading web pages.

Bandwidth/Data Transfer Rate Allocation - any web host that offers clients less than 1GB of Data Transfer per month should be viewed with suspicion. If your allocated Bandwidth per day is exceeded before the end of that particular day, the web host automatically disengages your account (meaning your website is taken offline). Depending by how much you exceeded the Bandwidth, your website can be offline by between 12 to 24 hours! Think about how much sales you lose in that time interval! More seriously, think about the damage to your reputation that is caused by this web hosting outage!

Operating System Used By the Servers on Which Your Website is Hosted - determines how easy it is for you to upload certain types of software that may be critical in automating certain tasks on your website. Most web hosting companies employ Linux Servers. They are faster and are compatible with most website software. This is not to say other types of Servers are "bad" - all we are saying is that they may need a specialist knowledge to be able to use them effectively, if you are not a computer science graduate (which is most of us!).

24-Hour Technical Support - is very critical if your website markets a service or products to your clients. Anything less than 24-hour support is unacceptable from a Web Hosting Company. Then again - there are many web hosts that claim to offer a 24-hour Support service 365 days a year, but anyone who has dealt with them tells a different story!

Website Backup Support - is also very critical. Can you easily backup your website (or can the web hosting company do it for you)? If this is not the case, think about what will happen if a natural disaster hits where your hosting servers are located. There is of cause the constant threat of viruses and hackers that can hit any server, anytime, anywhere in the world. There are lots of cases where hackers have deliberately destroyed web hosting servers.

Other Expected Features - does your web host offers other expected features like email addresses, alias emails, Autoresponders, Newsletter tools, protected Sub-Directories etc. How much of these are offered - only 10 Email addresses, for example! Check these as they may constrain the growth of your company!

Life Time Web Hosting - there are some companies that claim to offer "Life Time Web Hosting". Get it from us - there is no such a thing! These companies are nothing but cyber crooks who are there to cheat you out of your money. We haven't come across these type of web hosts in South Africa, but there are many of them out there. They play a psychology game where they make you think you've hit a jackpot - you start to buy more accounts with them but before you know it they close down and run with your money before you have even finished ONE year with most of your websites. If you come across a website promoting such a service - hit the close button of your browser fast!
